Ultraviolet Water Purifiers

From the Water Quality Association web page:

"One of the growing trends in disinfection is the use of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection units. Throughout the 1980's they became much more widely used in industrial and commercial applications, and with the development of new materials and commodity production of components, UV units are now becoming popular for residential use.

The UV design is quite simple. Its main component is the UV light source, which is enclosed in a transparent protective sleeve. It is mounted so that water can pass through a flow chamber, and UV rays are admitted and absorbed into the stream. These rays destroy bacteria and inactivate many viruses.

UV disinfects water without adding chemicals. It does not create new chemical complexes, nor does it change the taste or odor of the water, and does not remove any beneficial minerals in the water. Ultraviolet devices are most effective when the water has already been partially treated, and only the cleanest water passes through the UV flow chamber. UV devices are therefore often combined with other technologies such as carbon filters, water softeners, and reverse osmosis systems to provide complete water quality solutions."

Ultraviolet purification is a proven technology (EPA approved) that can protect your family from waterborne disease-causing microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, algae, and fungi. Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection works by delivering concentrated amounts of UV light energy to the reproductive mechanism of the microbe, effectively killing it. As water passes through the UV chamber, it instantly disinfects it. The only homeowner maintenance is to replace the bulb once per year.

Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant, but it has several drawbacks. Chlorine requires constant monitoring for proper dosage, as well as a holding tank to allow proper contact time. Chlorine reacts with naturally-occurring organic matter in water to form byproducts such as chloroform, a known carcinogen. In addition, chlorine leaves an objectionable taste and odor in the water. UV purifiers have none of these drawbacks - it disinfects without chemicals.

Two types of UV purifiers are available - point-of-entry, which installs on your main water line to purify all the water in your home, and point-of-use, which purify water at a single faucet.

Manufactured by Viqua, the Sterilight point-of-use ultraviolet purifiers can be used alone, or with combined with other filter configurations (see our full line of filters at the "drop-down" menu at the bottom of this page). The stainless steel chamber has 1/4" MNPT ends. It carries a 7 year warranty on the chamber, 5 years on hardware, and 1 year on bulb.

Sterilight point-of-entry ultraviolet purifiers connect to the main water line to purify the entire household water - all faucets, showers, and baths. The stainless steel water chamber has 3/4" MNPT ends. The control module/monitor can be installed in a convenient location. The monitor sounds an audio and visual alarm if the UV lamp fails. Optional performance alarm is available on the 12 gallon per minute model to monitor UV intensity. Three basic models are available for 5, 8, and 12 gpm flow rates - higher flow commercial units are also available. To determine your peak flow rate, time how long it takes to fill a 5 gallon bucket at an unrestricted outlet, such as an outside hose bib. You can then calculate the gallon per minute flow. For example, if it took 30 seconds (0.5 minutes) to fill, that would be 10 gallons per minute (5 divided by 0.5). It carries a 7 year warranty on the chamber, 5 years on hardware, and 1 year on bulb.

Note: it is recommended that a 5 micron or better sediment prefilter be installed ahead of the purifier. Water that is over 7 grains per gallon hard should be softened ahead of the purifier. Iron should be less than 0.3 ppm. Click HERE for information on our line of water softeners.

The contact disinfection property of UV light energy is measured in microwatt-seconds per square centimeter (µwsec/cm²). The Sterilight UV lamp provides 30,000 µwsec/cm² at the rated peak flow rate, providing a wide safety margin of killing power. The following chart shows the energy required to destroy various bacteria and viruses.

Micro-Organism Destruction Levels

(ultraviolet energy at 253.7 nm wavelength required for 99.9% destruction of various microorganisms -- in µwsec/cm²)

POINT-OF-ENTRY - WHOLE HOUSE

This modular system, incorporating our new Silver controller, is ideal for whole home treatment. Placed on the main water line, all the water in the home, including the hot water will receive disinfected water. The Silver controller provides constant output current and a universal power input (100-240V./50-60Hz.), as well as visually displaying remaining lamp life and total days of operation. All this is packaged in a new water-tight case and come fully CSA and CE compliant. Sterilume-EX coated low pressure germicidal UV lamps are used to provide an economical way of treating water requiring a 99.99% reduction in bacteria and viruses.

Units are manufactured with a polished, 304 stainless steel, pressure rated tube and comes with " MNPT connections for the 5 and 8 gpm models, with. " FNPT and 1" MNPT on the 12 gpm unit. Quality is evident throughout the Silver platform ranging from quartz sleeves with fire-polished ends to seamless connections. Lamp change is easily accomplished without interrupting the water flow and the overmoulded connector can be removed without any additional tools.

Sterilight recommends a sediment prefilter be installed ahead of any UV system. Go HERE to order.
